Compact Substation Supplier Selection Rests on Whole Unit Test Evidence
A compact substation is an integration before it is a product: transformer, high-voltage switchgear, low-voltage distribution, metering and a weather-sealed enclosure assembled, wired and tested as one factory unit. Component brands printed in a quotation therefore prove almost nothing; integration evidence decides. The decisive document is the whole-unit type test to IEC 62271-202. Temperature rise measured with every loss source heating the same enclosure air is what makes the rated output real on a summer afternoon — a transformer certificate alone cannot show it. Short-time withstand and peak-current tests applied to the assembled internal busbar system, not merely to the panel datasheets, show the circuit can carry the fault. An internal arc test report defines which faces of the enclosure remain safe for personnel while a fault burns inside it. Then examine what the supplier actually builds. The transformer: self-wound or outsourced, declared insulation class, sound level measured rather than estimated. The switchgear: certified type-tested panels or re-sourced assemblies. Routine test records should be serialised per delivered unit, not averaged by week. Finally the site: foundation drawing, operating clearances, cable entry routes, ambient range, and the corrosion protection class matching coastal or industrial air. A compact substation ordered without those numbers is a box, not a substation.
