Inductance: Technical Overview for Power Cable Impedance

Inductance is a fundamental electrical parameter of power cables that influences impedance, voltage drop, and short-circuit current levels. It arises from the magnetic field generated around the conductor when current flows. For AC systems, cable inductance, together with resistance, determines the total impedance, which is critical for power system modeling and protection coordination. Cable inductance is primarily determined by the geometric arrangement of conductors, the distance between phase conductors, the presence and type of metallic screening or armouring, and the magnetic permeability of surrounding materials. For three-core cables, inductance is generally lower than for single-core cables due to the cancellation of magnetic fields. Typical inductance values for low- and medium-voltage power cables range from approximately 0.08 to 0.15 mH/km, depending on construction. Key selection parameters include conductor arrangement (trefoil or flat formation for single-core cables), armouring type (steel wire, steel tape, or non-magnetic), cable spacing, and system frequency. For international projects, inductance and impedance values are calculated according to IEC 60287 and IEC 60909 standards. Manufacturers provide inductance and impedance data in technical datasheets and type test reports. Accurate inductance values are essential for voltage drop calculations, fault level analysis, and ensuring proper operation of protective devices in industrial and utility networks.
