Inverter: Technical Overview for PV, Storage, and Grid-Connected Systems
An inverter converts DC power into AC power and controls energy flow between PV arrays, battery systems, loads, and the grid. It performs DC-AC conversion, MPPT, grid synchronization, islanding protection, and performance monitoring. Common types include string inverters, central inverters, microinverters, hybrid inverters, and off-grid inverters. String inverters are widely used in residential, C&I, and utility-scale PV systems. Central inverters serve large ground-mounted plants. Microinverters enable module-level conversion. Hybrid inverters support PV, storage, and grid interaction in one unit. Key parameters include rated power, input voltage range, MPPT channels, efficiency, THD, protection class, communication interfaces, and operating temperature range. Selection should consider system topology, battery compatibility, grid code requirements, installation environment, and coordination with transformers and switchgear. For international projects, inverters may reference IEC 62109, UL 1741, IEEE 1547, and local grid interconnection standards.
