Lightning Protection and Earthing: Technical Overview for Energy Storage Systems
Lightning protection and earthing are essential for the safe and reliable operation of battery energy storage systems, PV-coupled storage, and industrial power installations. Because BESS combines high-energy battery modules, power electronics, communication equipment, and outdoor enclosures, it must be protected against direct lightning strikes, induced surges, ground potential rise, and insulation failure. External lightning protection covers air-termination systems, down conductors, and the earthing network. For containerized BESS, the metal enclosure can often serve as part of the external protection system when structural thickness, continuity, and down-conductor paths meet applicable requirements. The earthing system provides a low-impedance path for fault and lightning currents and supports equipotential bonding across battery racks, PCS units, transformers, switchgear, cable trays, and auxiliary equipment. Internal protection is implemented through surge protective devices installed at zone boundaries. AC-side SPDs are typically arranged at the service entrance, distribution boards, and equipment terminals. DC-side SPDs are installed at battery cluster outputs, DC distribution cabinets, and PCS DC inputs. Because DC arcs are more difficult to interrupt, DC SPDs must be selected specifically for DC system voltage, polarity, continuous operating voltage, and coordination with upstream overcurrent devices. Signal and communication circuits also require protection. BMS, EMS, PCS, fire detection, and monitoring interfaces usually rely on CAN, RS485, Ethernet, or other low-voltage links. Without proper shielding, grounding, and signal-level SPDs, induced transients can cause communication faults or controller damage. Grounding design should distinguish between protective earthing, functional earthing, and lightning earthing, and coordinate them through a common earthing network where required by project standards. Ground resistance targets, bonding methods, separation distances, and SPD coordination depend on local codes, soil conditions, system voltage, and grid interconnection requirements. For international projects, lightning protection and earthing design may reference IEC 62305 for lightning risk assessment and external/internal protection, IEC 62933-5-2 for grid-integrated electrochemical storage safety, UL 9540 for energy storage system electrical and grounding requirements, NFPA 780 for lightning protection system installation, and NFPA 70 for grounding and bonding in North American applications.
