Partial Discharge: Technical Overview for Cable Insulation Integrity

Partial discharge refers to localized electrical discharges that occur within small voids, impurities, or along the surface of cable insulation when subjected to high electric stress. It is a critical indicator of insulation quality, as persistent partial discharge can gradually degrade insulation and lead to premature cable failure. For extruded insulation power cables, partial discharge testing is a standard routine and type test requirement. Under IEC 60502-2, medium-voltage cables are tested at 1.73U₀ during routine inspection, with discharge levels required to remain below specified thresholds (typically ≤10 pC). For higher voltage cables under IEC 60840, type test limits are stricter, often requiring ≤5 pC at 1.5U₀. Key factors influencing partial discharge include insulation material purity, manufacturing process control, conductor and insulation screen smoothness, and the absence of voids or contaminants. Test methods follow IEC 60885-3 and IEC 60270, which define measurement circuits, calibration procedures, and sensitivity requirements (typically 10 pC or better). Manufacturers perform partial discharge tests on every cable length during production, with results documented in test certificates. Low partial discharge levels confirm consistent insulation quality and support long-term operational reliability in substations, transmission networks, and industrial power systems.
