Photovoltaic Cables: Technical Overview for Solar Power Systems
Photovoltaic cables are specially designed for DC circuits in solar power systems, including module interconnection, string wiring, combiner box connections, and inverter input circuits. These cables must withstand prolonged outdoor exposure, UV radiation, temperature cycling, and mechanical stress in rooftop, ground-mounted, and utility-scale PV plants. Typical constructions use fine-stranded tinned copper conductors with cross-linked insulation and sheath materials such as XLPO or EPR. Tinned copper helps improve corrosion resistance, while cross-linked compounds provide better thermal stability than conventional PVC. Photovoltaic cables are commonly rated for 1,000 V DC or 1,500 V DC systems, with operating temperature ranges often extending from -40 °C to 90 °C or higher, depending on the standard and construction. Key selection parameters include system voltage, conductor cross-section, temperature rating, UV resistance, flame retardancy, bending radius, and compatibility with PV connectors. For international projects, photovoltaic cables may reference EN 50618, UL 4703, IEC 62930, and applicable local electrical codes.
