Power Conversion System: Technical Overview for Energy Storage Integration

A Power Conversion System, or PCS, is the bidirectional power conversion interface between battery energy storage and the AC grid or local loads. It converts DC power from lithium-ion battery racks into AC power during discharge, and converts AC power from the grid or generators into DC power during charging. The PCS typically includes a bidirectional DC/AC converter, control unit, protection circuits, and communication interfaces. Common topologies include single-stage DC/AC and two-stage DC/DC plus DC/AC designs. Single-stage topologies offer higher efficiency and simpler structure, while two-stage topologies provide wider DC voltage range and more flexible battery configuration. Three-level topologies are increasingly adopted in medium- and high-power applications for lower harmonic distortion and higher voltage utilization. Key technical parameters include rated AC power, DC voltage range, maximum DC current, conversion efficiency, THD, power factor range, AC voltage and frequency, response time, cooling method, enclosure protection rating, and communication protocol. The PCS communicates with the BMS for battery status monitoring and receives dispatch commands from the EMS for charge/discharge scheduling. Operating modes include grid-tied mode, off-grid mode, and seamless transfer between both. In grid-tied mode, the PCS operates as a current source synchronized with the grid, supporting peak shaving, frequency regulation, and reactive power compensation. In off-grid mode, it operates as a voltage source to supply stable AC power to local loads. For international projects, PCS products may reference UL 1741 for inverter safety and grid interconnection, IEEE 1547 for distributed energy resource interconnection, IEC 62109 for power converter safety, and IEC 62909 for bidirectional grid-connected power converters. Proper PCS selection should consider battery voltage matching, grid code compliance, communication protocol compatibility, thermal management conditions, and site environment.
