PV Combiner Box: Technical Overview for Solar Array Integration
A PV combiner box, or string combiner box, is a DC-side electrical assembly used to aggregate, protect, and monitor multiple photovoltaic strings before they connect to an inverter. It is commonly installed between the PV array and the inverter in residential, commercial, industrial, and utility-scale solar systems. Inside the combiner box, each PV string connects through a fuse holder or DC breaker. This provides overcurrent protection and prevents reverse current flow from parallel strings when one string is shaded, damaged, or disconnected. Downstream of the string fuses, currents are collected on a busbar sized for the total array current and expected temperature rise. A DC surge protective device is typically installed to clamp overvoltage spikes caused by lightning or switching transients. Grounding and bonding bars provide equipment grounding, and in some designs, DC negative bonding is included according to system requirements. Enclosures for outdoor installation are usually rated IP65 or higher, with UV-resistant materials and sealed cable entries. String monitoring is an optional but increasingly common feature. Hall sensors or shunt resistors can measure current, voltage, SPD status, and temperature for each string, and transmit data through RS485, Modbus, or other interfaces to local controllers or SCADA platforms. This helps identify underperforming strings and reduces troubleshooting time. PV combiner boxes are typically rated for 600 V, 1000 V, or 1500 V DC systems. Utility-scale plants often use 1500 V DC to reduce cable losses, while commercial and residential systems commonly use 1000 V or 1500 V DC depending on inverter and module configuration. For international projects, product evaluation may reference IEC 62446 for PV system requirements, UL 1741 for inverter and interconnection equipment, UL 508A for industrial control panels, UL 489B for PV DC breakers, UL 248-19 for PV fuses, and relevant IEC or UL standards for surge protection and enclosure protection. Proper selection should consider string count, system voltage, rated current, fuse or breaker rating, SPD type, monitoring capability, enclosure rating, and inverter compatibility.
