Rated Current: Technical Overview for Cable Ampacity

Rated current, often referred to as ampacity, is the maximum continuous current a cable can carry under specified installation conditions without exceeding the permissible temperature of its insulation. Unlike rated voltage, which is a fixed design parameter, rated current varies significantly depending on how and where the cable is installed. The current-carrying capacity is primarily determined by conductor material (copper or aluminum), cross-sectional area, and insulation thermal limits (e.g., 70°C for PVC, 90°C for XLPE). However, real-world ampacity must be adjusted using correction factors for ambient air or soil temperature, burial depth, soil thermal resistivity, and grouping with other cables. For instance, cables installed in buried ducts or grouped closely together will dissipate heat less efficiently, requiring a reduction in rated current to prevent overheating. Key selection parameters include installation method (air, buried, duct, tray), ambient temperature, soil thermal resistivity, cable grouping, harmonic content, and conductor material. For international projects, current ratings are typically calculated according to IEC 60287 or IEC 60364-5-52 standards. Manufacturers provide current rating tables based on standard reference conditions. Engineers must apply appropriate derating factors to ensure safe operation and long-term reliability. Accurate rated current calculation is essential for preventing thermal degradation and ensuring system safety.
