Relays Manufacturer Capability Shows on the IEC 60255 Bench
Relays do two jobs the grid cannot delegate: they decide, and they actuate. A relays manufacturer is therefore judged on both halves — the measurement path and the output contacts — under the IEC 60255 series that governs protective relay equipment. The input chain must survive what the fault delivers: dielectric withstand on auxiliary and input circuits to IEC 60255-5, galvanic isolation between current inputs, voltage inputs, supplies and outputs, and sampling that holds accuracy through the damped DC component of a nearby short circuit. The output chain is where cheap parts fail: a tripping contact that welds or refuses to close has outlived every algorithm behind it, so making and breaking capacity of contacts, and endurance class declarations, belong in the specification sheet, not the footnote. EMC separates classes of build. IEC 60255-22-2 immunity to fast transients, surges and radio-frequency fields is the difference between a relay that operates for the fault and one that operates for the switching of a nearby disconnector; ageing and mechanical-life tests to IEC 60255-27 and -23 complete the picture. A serious relays manufacturer delivers firmware version records, per-unit routine secondary-injection checks against each declared setting, and timing measurements for every output. When a relays manufacturer can produce that file, the relay protects twice — at the fault and at the audit.
