Steel Tape Armouring (STA): Technical Overview for Cable Mechanical Protection

Steel tape armouring, or STA, is a metallic protective layer applied beneath the outer sheath of power cables to provide mechanical protection and limited radial crush resistance. It is commonly used in underground installations, direct burial applications, industrial plants, substations, and fixed routing where cables may be exposed to soil pressure, external impact, or construction-related mechanical stress. STA constructions typically use galvanized or coated steel tapes applied helically over the bedding layer. This design offers good compressive strength and protection against external damage, making it suitable for MV and LV power cables in demanding environments. However, steel tape armouring is not intended to carry significant tensile loads. Where high pulling tension is expected, steel wire armouring may be more appropriate. Key selection parameters include tape thickness, number of layers, tape material and coating, cable diameter, installation method, burial depth, soil conditions, and corrosion protection. For international projects, steel tape armoured cables may reference IEC 60502, IEC 60228, IEC 60332, IEC 60754, IEC 61034, BS 6346, BS 5467, and applicable utility or project specifications. Manufacturers typically support type tests, routine tests, mechanical performance checks, flame propagation tests, and third-party certification. STA cable selection should be matched to installation environment, mechanical risk level, earthing requirements, and local standards.
