Steel Wire Armouring (SWA): Technical Overview for Mechanical and Tensile Protection

Steel wire armouring, or SWA, is a metallic protective layer applied beneath the outer sheath of power cables to provide mechanical protection, radial crush resistance, and tensile strength. It is widely used in underground installations, direct burial applications, cable ducts, industrial plants, substations, and outdoor fixed routing where cables are exposed to mechanical stress, soil movement, or pulling tension. SWA constructions typically use galvanized steel wires applied helically over the bedding layer. Compared with steel tape armouring, SWA offers higher tensile strength and better resistance to axial loads, making it more suitable for vertical runs, long cable pulls, and installations where the cable may be subject to stretching or ground movement. Key selection parameters include wire diameter, number of wires, armour material and coating, cable diameter, installation method, burial depth, earthing arrangement, and corrosion protection. For international projects, SWA cables may reference IEC 60502, IEC 60228, IEC 60332, IEC 60754, IEC 61034, BS 5467, BS 6724, and applicable utility or project specifications. Manufacturers typically support type tests, routine tests, mechanical performance checks, flame propagation tests, and third-party certification. SWA cable selection should be matched to mechanical risk level, tensile load requirements, earthing design, and local installation standards.
