Transformer Tank Design Begins with Pressure Boundaries Not Steel Weight

A transformer tank is a pressure boundary before it is a cover. Its first duty is mechanical: the vessel must withstand the full vacuum of oil deaeration without collapsing, and briefly survive internal overpressure when an in-tank fault builds gas faster than the relief device vents it. The oil-expansion scheme then sets the maintenance life. Conservator tanks add a sight glass and an air path — mitigated with nitrogen or de-oxidising preservation, but leak surfaces remain. Hermetically sealed bellows and corrugated-wall designs keep the oil permanently separated from atmosphere, so moisture and oxygen never age the insulation and dielectric strength holds for decades. Cooling follows the same logic. A corrugated-fin transformer tank removes the gasket joints a radiator-to-wall connection would carry — every detachable joint is a future leak — while detachable radiators suit larger units where cleaning access matters more than wall area. Steel life decides the second half of a transformer tank's service: blasting to Sa 2½, then a coating system matched to the site's ISO 12944 corrosion class, C3 inland to C5 offshore. Field leaks concentrate at bushings, tap-changer housings and valve mounts rather than weld seams, so oil-rated gasket compounds and qualified welding procedures decide long service. Before dispatch, every transformer tank should carry a positive-pressure tightness test record under its own serial number.
