Underground Power Cable: Technical Overview for Distribution and Substation Projects
An underground power cable is installed below ground for power distribution, substation interconnection, and renewable energy plant cabling. Typical constructions include copper or aluminum conductors, XLPE or PVC insulation, metallic screening, and steel tape or steel wire armor. XLPE insulation generally supports continuous conductor temperatures up to 90 °C, with short-circuit temperatures up to 250 °C for a maximum of 5 seconds. Underground cables are used for direct burial, cable ducts, trenches, tunnels, and industrial networks. Armored designs provide mechanical protection, while PE or PVC outer sheaths improve moisture and corrosion resistance. Cable selection should consider rated voltage, conductor cross-section, number of cores, armor type, bending radius, soil thermal resistivity, burial depth, and fault current capacity. For international projects, underground power cables may reference IEC 60502 for extruded-insulation power cables, IEC 60228 for conductor classes, IEC 60332 for flame propagation tests, and IEC 60287 for current rating calculation.
