Current carrying capacity, commonly referred to as ampacity, is the maximum continuous current a cable can carry without exceeding the permitted temperature of its insulation, sheath, or surrounding installation environment. It is determined by thermal balance: heat generated by conductor losses, dielectric losses, and metallic screen or armour losses must be dissipated safely into the surrounding medium. Ampacity is not a fixed value for a given cable size. It depends on conductor material and cross-section, insulation type, installation method, ambient temperature, soil thermal resistivity, burial depth, cable grouping, and harmonic content. For international projects, steady-state current ratings are typically calculated according to IEC 60287, while reference tables and correction factors are provided in standards such as IEC 60502 and IEC 60364-5-52. Common derating factors include ambient air or soil temperature, multi-circuit grouping, conduit or duct installation, direct burial conditions, solar radiation for outdoor runs, and high-altitude environments. Manufacturer datasheets usually list reference ampacity values under standard conditions; actual site ampacity must be verified by applying the relevant correction factors. Accurate ampacity assessment supports proper cable sizing, voltage drop control, protection coordination, and long-term thermal reliability.
