EV Charger / Electric Vehicle Charger: Technical Overview for AC and DC Charging Systems
An EV charger, or electric vehicle supply equipment, delivers electrical energy from the grid or a local power source to an electric vehicle battery. AC chargers supply alternating current, and the vehicle’s onboard charger converts it to direct current. DC chargers perform AC-DC conversion inside the charging unit, allowing higher power delivery without relying on the vehicle’s onboard charger. AC charging is commonly used for residential, workplace, fleet, and destination charging. Typical power levels range from 7 kW to 22 kW, depending on supply voltage, phase configuration, and vehicle capability. DC fast charging is used for public hubs, highway corridors, depot charging, and high-utilization sites, with typical output ranging from 50 kW to more than 300 kW. A typical EV charger includes power electronics, contactors, residual-current protection, metering, a control pilot circuit, user interface, communication module, cable assembly, and connector. For outdoor installation, enclosure protection, thermal management, UV resistance, and corrosion protection should be considered. Site design must also cover cable sizing, earthing, overcurrent protection, and coordination with upstream switchgear. Communication and management are important for commercial deployments. OCPP enables chargers to connect to a charging station management system for remote monitoring, firmware updates, access control, and smart charging. Dynamic load management can help balance multiple chargers within a limited site capacity. For international projects, EV chargers may reference IEC 61851 for conductive charging systems, IEC 62196 for connectors and vehicle inlets, ISO 15118 for digital communication and plug-and-charge functions, and IEC 63584 for OCPP 2.0.1. Product evaluation should consider charging mode, connector type, communication protocol, environmental rating, grid interconnection requirements, and compatibility with PV, storage, and transformer capacity.
