Power Conversion System: Technical Overview for Energy Storage Applications
A Power Conversion System, or PCS, is the bidirectional power conversion unit that connects a battery energy storage system with the grid or local loads. It converts alternating current to direct current during charging and converts stored DC power back to AC during discharging, while also supporting grid synchronization, reactive power control, and system protection. A typical PCS consists of a bidirectional DC/AC converter, control unit, protection circuits, and communication interfaces. It receives dispatch signals from the energy management system and status information from the battery management system, then adjusts charging and discharging power accordingly. PCS topologies are commonly classified as single-stage or two-stage. Single-stage systems use only a DC/AC stage, offering higher efficiency and simpler structure but narrower battery voltage range. Two-stage systems add a DC/DC stage, providing wider voltage adaptability and more flexible battery configuration at the cost of additional conversion losses. Operationally, a PCS may run in grid-connected mode, where it follows grid voltage and frequency as a current source, or in off-grid mode, where it acts as a voltage source to establish local AC supply. Grid-forming PCS designs can actively support voltage and frequency, providing inertia-like response and black-start capability, which is increasingly relevant in weak grids and microgrids. Key technical parameters include rated AC power, DC voltage range, AC voltage and frequency, maximum conversion efficiency, power factor range, THD, response time, parallel operation capability, protection functions, and communication protocol. Relevant standards may include IEC 62109 for power converter safety, IEC 62933 for electrical energy storage systems, and local grid interconnection requirements. Proper PCS selection should consider battery voltage characteristics, grid conditions, application scenario, thermal management, protection coordination, and integration with the BMS and EMS.
