Short Circuit Temperature: Technical Overview for Cable Thermal Withstand

Short circuit temperature refers to the maximum temperature a cable conductor can withstand for a brief duration during a fault condition without sustaining permanent damage to its insulation or structure. Unlike continuous operating temperature, this limit applies to transient events, typically lasting from a few cycles up to five seconds, depending on protection settings. For standard XLPE-insulated cables, the limiting short circuit temperature is 250°C. For PVC-insulated cables, it is generally 160°C, and for EPR insulation, it is typically 250°C. These values are defined by the thermal stability of the polymer material and are specified in international standards such as IEC 60502, IEC 60840, and IEC 60949. The permissible short circuit current is calculated based on conductor cross-section, material (copper or aluminum), initial conductor temperature, and fault duration. The relationship is commonly expressed using the adiabatic equation, where the conductor size must be sufficient to absorb the thermal energy without exceeding the limiting temperature. Key parameters include conductor material, insulation type, fault clearing time, initial operating temperature, and the adiabatic constant (k-factor). Manufacturers provide short circuit ratings in technical datasheets to support protection coordination and system design. Accurate short circuit temperature data ensures that cables can safely withstand fault currents in utility, industrial, and renewable energy networks.
