Solar Floating Mounting System: Technical Overview for FPV Projects

A solar floating mounting system supports photovoltaic modules on water surfaces such as reservoirs, lakes, ponds, and coastal areas. Instead of using ground piles or roof attachments, the system relies on buoyant structures, mooring lines, and anchors to maintain array position and structural stability. The main components include floating platforms, module mounting frames, connection hardware, electrical cable management, and a mooring or anchoring system. Floating platforms are commonly made from high-density polyethylene, which provides buoyancy, corrosion resistance, and long-term durability in water environments. Module frames are usually supported by aluminum alloy or corrosion-treated metal structures. The mooring system prevents array drift caused by wind, waves, currents, and water-level changes. Floating mounting systems can be designed as flat arrays or tilted arrays. Flat designs reduce wind load and simplify installation, while tilted designs improve energy yield by optimizing the incident angle of sunlight. Array layout should consider shading, water depth, wind exposure, wave action, maintenance access, and cable routing to shore-based inverters and transformers. Key design factors include buoyancy reserve, wind and wave load resistance, UV aging resistance, water chemistry compatibility, temperature range, snow load capacity, and long-term fatigue performance of connectors. For marine or high-humidity environments, material selection should also address salt spray corrosion, biofouling, and waterproof cable requirements. For international projects, floating PV systems may reference DNV-ST-C108 for float structural design, DNV-ST-E309 for mooring and station keeping, IEC 60364-7-712 for PV electrical installation, IEC 61701 for salt mist corrosion testing, and local geotechnical, hydrological, and grid interconnection standards. Product evaluation should consider float material specification, mooring configuration, design water level variation, installation method, environmental compatibility, and coordination with inverters, transformers, and energy storage equipment.
