Solar Inverter / PV Inverter: Technical Overview for PV System Integration

A solar inverter, or PV inverter, converts DC power from photovoltaic modules into AC power for local loads or grid connection. It performs MPPT, grid synchronization, power quality control, anti-islanding protection, and system monitoring. Main types include string inverters, central inverters, microinverters, and hybrid inverters. String inverters serve residential, C&I, and utility-scale systems. Central inverters are used in large ground-mounted plants. Microinverters provide module-level conversion. Hybrid inverters integrate PV, battery storage, and grid interaction. Key parameters include rated power, input voltage range, MPPT channels, efficiency, THD, protection class, communication interfaces, and operating temperature range. Selection should consider system topology, battery compatibility, grid code requirements, installation environment, and coordination with PV arrays, transformers, and switchgear. For international projects, solar inverters may reference IEC 62109 for safety, IEC TS 62786-2 for grid connection, IEEE 1547 for interconnection, and applicable local electrical codes.
