Solar Tracking Mounting System: Technical Overview for PV and PV-Storage Projects

A solar tracking mounting system adjusts the orientation of photovoltaic modules to follow the sun’s movement, improving daily energy yield compared with fixed-tilt installations. These systems are mainly used in utility-scale plants, large C&I ground-mounted projects, and PV-storage sites where land area, grid connection capacity, and energy yield targets require higher utilization of installed capacity. Single-axis trackers rotate around one axis, typically east-west, and are widely adopted in large ground-mounted projects because they balance energy gain, structural complexity, and cost. Dual-axis trackers adjust both azimuth and tilt angles, providing higher tracking precision but requiring more complex mechanical structures and controls. A typical tracking mounting system includes steel support structures, drive units, actuators or motors, slewing mechanisms, foundation piles, module clamps, grounding hardware, sensors, and a tracker controller. The controller executes tracking algorithms based on sun position, site latitude, time, and environmental inputs. In high-wind conditions, the system should enter a stow position to reduce structural load and protect modules and foundations. Design must consider wind load, snow load, seismic requirements, soil conditions, corrosion protection, backtracking to avoid inter-row shading, maintenance access, and integration with inverters, transformers, and battery storage equipment. Material selection usually involves hot-dip galvanized steel or aluminum alloy, with fasteners and bearings specified for long-term outdoor operation. For international projects, solar tracking mounting systems may reference IEC 62817 for tracker design qualification, UL 3703 for solar tracker safety, UL 2703 for PV mounting and grounding systems, IEC 60364-7-712 for PV electrical installation, and local structural and grid interconnection standards. Product evaluation should consider tracking type, drive reliability, stow strategy, controller logic, foundation compatibility, environmental protection rating, and coordination with site electrical infrastructure.
