Thermal Management System: Technical Overview for Battery Energy Storage
A thermal management system for battery energy storage is responsible for maintaining battery modules and packs within a suitable operating temperature range, limiting temperature differences between cells, and supporting safe and stable charge and discharge operation. It works together with the battery management system, power conversion system, and energy management system to control cooling, heating, and ventilation according to real-time operating conditions. Lithium-ion batteries perform best when cell temperature is kept roughly between 15 °C and 35 °C. Excessive heat can accelerate aging and increase thermal runaway risk, while low temperature can reduce available capacity, increase internal resistance, and limit safe charging current. The thermal management system uses temperature sensors, controllers, cooling or heating devices, airflow or liquid circuits, and communication interfaces to respond to these conditions. Air-cooled systems use fans, filters, ducts, or industrial air conditioners to remove heat from battery cabinets or containers. They are structurally simple, relatively easy to maintain, and widely used in residential, commercial, and smaller containerized systems. Liquid-cooled systems use pumps, cold plates, heat exchangers, and coolant circuits to provide more precise temperature control and lower inter-cell temperature differences. They are increasingly used in high-capacity, high C-rate, and densely packed installations. In larger BESS projects, thermal management also addresses condensation control, humidity management, coolant leakage detection, filter maintenance, and noise limits. For international projects, system design may reference UL 9540 for energy storage system safety, UL 9540A for thermal runaway fire propagation assessment, IEC 62619 for industrial lithium battery safety, and NFPA 855 for stationary energy storage installation. Product selection should consider ambient climate, installation environment, rated power, C-rate, duty cycle, enclosure layout, cooling capacity, auxiliary power consumption, communication protocol, redundancy design, and compatibility with the battery pack, PCS, and EMS.
