XLPE Cable: Technical Overview for Power Distribution

XLPE cable uses cross-linked polyethylene insulation to provide higher thermal, mechanical, and electrical performance than conventional PVC-insulated cable. It is widely used in low-voltage, medium-voltage, and high-voltage power distribution networks, including substations, industrial plants, underground feeders, infrastructure projects, and renewable energy connections. Typical constructions use copper or aluminum conductors with XLPE insulation. Medium- and high-voltage XLPE cables generally include conductor and insulation screens to control electric field distribution, while armored variants with steel tape or steel wire provide mechanical protection for direct burial and industrial installations. Key selection parameters include rated voltage, conductor cross-section, number of cores, insulation thickness, armor type, sheath compound, fire performance, bending radius, and short-circuit rating. XLPE cables typically support a continuous conductor operating temperature of 90 °C and a short-circuit temperature up to 250 °C for a maximum of 5 seconds. For international projects, XLPE cables may reference IEC 60502, IEC 60840, IEC 62067, IEC 60228, IEC 60332, and applicable local standards. Manufacturers commonly support type tests, routine tests, factory acceptance tests, and third-party certification to confirm compliance with project specifications.
