UV Resistance: Technical Overview for Outdoor Cable Materials

UV resistance refers to a cable material’s ability to withstand prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation without significant degradation of mechanical, electrical, or environmental performance. It is especially important for cables installed outdoors, including overhead lines, solar power systems, wind farms, port infrastructure, temporary power routes, exposed industrial trays, and outdoor substations. Prolonged UV exposure can cause polymer sheaths and insulation to become brittle, crack, fade, or lose tensile strength. UV-resistant cables typically use stabilized PVC, polyethylene, cross-linked polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, or other specially formulated compounds. Carbon black is commonly added to polyethylene sheaths to improve UV absorption and long-term outdoor durability. Key selection parameters include UV exposure level, installation orientation, ambient temperature range, expected service life, mechanical stress, chemical exposure, and compatibility with flame retardant, LSZH, armoured, or unarmoured constructions. Manufacturers typically support type tests, routine tests, UV aging tests, heat aging tests, cold bend tests, tensile strength retention tests, and third-party certification.
